Where can I get a list of the various browsers detected by BrowserHawk and possible return values for the properties?

Q   I would like to know if BrowserHawk detects a particular browser. Where can I get a list of the various browsers and other such devices detected by BrowserHawk? Also how can I see what possible return values are for properties?

A   The list of browsers and other devices (such as cell phones and PDAs) detected by BrowserHawk continues to expand quickly due to changes in the marketplace.

In order to determine what browsers/devices are detected you need to open the latest Browser Definition File (BDF) in your BrowserHawk Editor. Once open you can scroll through the browser tree and see all the devices in detail.

Likewise you can use the BrowserHawk Editor to examine the list of possible return values for given properties by examining both the entries in the browser pane and filters pane. Note however that some properties are determined at run time (for example ServicePack, ProxyString and others) with no way to know in advance what possible return values would be.

To quickly see all the basic (non-extended) property values that BrowserHawk will return for a specific user agent, use the Hit Tester. This is accessible from the BH Editor menu under View->Hit Tester. Enter the user agent you want to see the return values for, and press the Test button.

If you do not currently own a copy of BrowserHawk you can simply download an evaluation copy of the software and install it - in the last step of the installation BH opens the BDF file for you so getting to that point is self explanatory.

Note to BrowserHawk4J users: The BrowserHawk Editor is only available by installing the BrowserHawk ActiveX/.NET version of BrowserHawk on a Windows machine. BrowserHawk4J and BrowserHawk ActiveX/.NET can coexist on a machine without causing problems, so you can install a copy if you would like to use the BH Editor.
